PA Cyber Charter School graduates 900; Ceremonies in Pittsburgh, Harrisburg

PITTSBURGH, Pa. – The Pennsylvania Cyber Charter School will graduate more than 900 members in the Class of 2009, its largest graduating class ever, said CEO Dr. Nick Trombetta.

The school’s ninth commencement exercises are, for the third year, split into western and eastern ceremonies in Pittsburgh and Harrisburg. About two-thirds of those who have completed graduation requirements are expected to attend the cap-and-gown commencement exercises.

“You’re changing the way America thinks about education,” Trombetta told graduates and their families at western graduation ceremonies June 6 at the Petersen Events Center on the University of Pittsburgh campus.

Trombetta said members of the Class of ‘09 had educational choice and took full advantage of it by selecting their own school. “So many schools across the country forgot what was important. They forgot the focus was to be on the student and the family,” he said.

Competition from cyber schools has forced traditional schools to begin incorporating online courses into their curriculum, but they still cannot offer the services, innovation and flexibility of a cyber education, said Trombetta.

Eastern graduation is planned for 6:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11, at The Forum facility in the state capitol complex in Harrisburg.

Speeches at PA Cyber graduation ceremonies are kept at a minimum so that the focus can be on the graduates. As each graduate crosses the stage to receive his or her diploma, a presenter announces the name, parents, hometown, and a brief statement of accomplishments, scholarships and career or educational plans.
